Restoration of the Sacred Stones: 2003 to 2008

2003, September 14: Historic groundbreaking and blessing of the site. Noted guests included Bishop Richard Garcia; Dr. Jose Miguel and his wife Nancy; Catherine Pyke from the Hearst Foundation; Dede Wilsey, president of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco; Dr. Margaret Burke
2003, November: Chapter House foundation is poured. The foundation required 42 tons of rebar and 23 concrete trucks full of cement.
2004, April: The entire front portal wall is poured all at once. This portal wall will eventually encase the three entrance arches (earthquake code requirement).
2004, Summer: The three lancet windows on the east side of the chapter house are installed using some of the original stones.
2005, Summer: Construction continues and the monastery celebrates 50th anniversary of foundation.
2006, April: Dede Wilsey from the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco hosts a reception at the De Young Museum to raise awareness of the Sacred Stones project.
2006: The atrium is constructed along with the arched window and the oculus windows.
2007, July: The monastic community celebrates in a joyous ceremony the placing of the first portal stone. A time capsule is embedded in the foundation stone that will support the columns of the southern end of the portal. Inside the time capsule are the names of all the donors to date, of the Sacred Stones project.
