Restoration of the Sacred Stones: 2008 to the Present

In September of 2013 the medieval section of the new church is completed.
2008, Spring: Chico State University president, Paul Zingg, along with 40 university faculty, deans, administrators and community leaders visit the abbey to learn about the Sacred Stones project and present Abbot Thomas with a commemorative plaque.
2008, October: The three arches of the portal are completed in time for the celebration for Abbot Thomas’ 75th birthday and upcoming retirement.
2008, December: Abbot Thomas retires from 38 years of abbatial ministry to the monastery.
2009, January: Community elects Fr. Paul Mark Schwan as their new abbot.
2009: The original stones of the interior walls of the chapter house are put in place. The two central columns are erected. The capitals of these central columns are carved by the stonemasons.
2010: Construction begins on the interior stone vaulting of the chapter house. The plan is to complete four of the six bays of the vaulted ceiling.
2011: The construction of the bays will continue this summer.
2011, December: All six bays of the vaulted ceiling are completed and the final stone is placed into the chapter house.
2012, January- March: Crew puts in installation and electricity.
2012, April: Shoring and scaffolding are removed displaying the trans-vaulted ceiling for the first time.
2012, October: The chapter house will now be integrated with the surrounding structure to form the new church for the abbey.
2013, September: The medieval portion of the new church is complete. Funds are currently being raised to complete the seating area, lobby, and sacristy.
